Essential Job Duties:
NC State University's College of Natural Resources Forest Assets Team (FA) is seeking a highly motivated person to fill the role of Facility Maintenance Technician at the Slocum Camp Facilities located in Hill Forest in Bahama, North Carolina. The person will assist FA with daily, weekly, and seasonal tasks related to the maintenance and upkeep of Slocum Camp and serve as onsite contact for groups visiting Slocum Camp. This job requires a self-motivated person with skills related to facilities maintenance. Candidates must be able to live on-site in the caretaker's house; a rental value of $1,000/month that will be considered part of the employee's compensation and fully taxable. Work requires flexible hours to include day, night, weekend, holidays and on-call availability. All materials, tools, supplies, and instruction will be provided by FA. All responsibilities for this position are exclusive to Slocum Camp at Hill Forest.

Other duties include:
  • Provide on-site contact for visitors at Slocum Camp on Hill Forest, including service contractors, NC State faculty, or other camp visitors.
  • Provide maintenance services to facilities at Slocum Camp, including carpentry, plumbing, electrical, power washing, and painting.
  • Provide oversite and inventory of facility supplies, including paper products, cleaning supplies, and heating gas.
  • Communicate camp needs to the Forest Manager.
  • Ensure camp facilities are prepared ahead of visitor events.
  • Ensure camp facilities are secure after events and during weekends. Winterize water supply system for camp facilities.
  • Seasonal yard, deck cleaning and gutter maintenance.
  • Perform post-work inspections on tasks completed by outside contractors and/or NCSU personnel.
  • Manage facility usage records for onsite crews and personnel staying at Slocum.



Please note that this position is located in Bahama, NC.

Minimum Education and Experience:
High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. Some positions may require special licenses or certification(s).

Optional Guidelines: Experience in the trade(s) areas related to the area of assignment may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.

Other Required Qualifications:
  • Lift up to 50 pounds frequently, with or without reasonable accommodations
  • Have demonstrated the ability to use basic hand and shop tools, manual and powered, for maintenance and repair of equipment
  • Walking through rough terrain on unstable ground
  • Operate ATV's and equipment
  • Clear communication, both written and oral
  • Renters insurance and references necessary for renting caretaker's house


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience in facilities maintenance
